Emile De Visscher is a design researcher, engineer, inventor and entrepreneur, currently Junior Professor at Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris Saclay. He is part of the Centre de Recherche en Design, a research lab founded by ENS and ENSCI-Les Ateliers in Paris.
Through practical research project, publications, teaching, PhD direction, essays and exhibitions, he explores the relations between technology, society and culture in an attempt to participate in the construction of democratic technodiversity. He has presented his work in more than 50 international exhibitions, recieved several innovation awards and gives lectures in numerous design universities and schools in Europe.
Emile De Visscher first studied Mechanical Engineering and Material Sciences at Université de Technologie de Compiègne (FR, 2009). He then continued his design education in the Innovation Design Engineering double Masters program between the Royal College of Art and the Imperial College London (UK, 2012). He worked in a startup for 2 years, to then focus on design research. Between 2014 and 2018, he obtained a PhD in the Sciences, Arts, Création, Recherche (SACRe) program, called “Technophanic Manufactures”, between Université Paris Sciences et Lettres and École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In 2019, he joined the “Matters of Activity” Excellence Cluster in Berlin as postdoc and research associate. In 2023, he obtained a CPJ position (tenure track) at ENS Paris Saclay, where he teaches and conduct design research since.
In parallel, Emile De Visscher created a startup based on a technology he co-invented with fellow designers, Polyfloss, now deployed in humanitarian settings. He also created a design research collective, LPP, which publishes books and journals, and curates design exhibitions.
